Driving out west in our rental car, we stopped to take a photo of the adjacent meadow, where the dried grass appeared to be glowing in the morning sunlight. It was a sensational moment, to be sure. That got us talking about the real CA gold rush of 1848. Legend has it that one of my ancestors left to pan for gold, and he never returned!
